Both are Level 2 open palm gloves built for competition, but the key differences are based on a fighter's strengths and preferences:

If you are a stand-up striker, the PT901 Stopper is a built to your fighting style. The 4 Oz. padding is built up higher on the knuckles for better protection and the wrist wrap is longer for an extra measure of support while striking.
If you prefer to take your opponent to the ground for some G&P (Ground & Pound) or submission, you need maximum flexibility and as well as a hard hitting glove. This is the PT981. This glove has the padding dispersed over a wider base. The padding is thinner (but still 4 oz.) which gives you more flexibility and close combat strike energy.
